UK Economy in Double Dip Recession

Figures out today from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the UK economy has slipped back into recession after shrinking by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2012. The figures, which have been described by David Cameron as “very very disappointing,” are a blow to the Coalition government who have stuck by their swathing public sector cuts.

Labour leader Ed Milliband called the figures “catastrophic” and claimed of David Cameron that, “This is a recession made by him and the chancellor.” His reasoning pointed to sharp cuts in Public Sector investment resulting in a 3% decrease in output in the construction sector, which played a big part in the overall reduction in economic output.

While these figures may yet be revised upwards as more data becomes available, they are at odds with other recent surveys which paint a more positive picture of the economy. The questions raised about these estimates will be more about business confidence for the year ahead. As the government looks to companies to create jobs and increase investment this may dent confidence for future growth, especially with continuing turmoil in Europe.

Reading into the figures though there are some positive signs with output in the service sector increasing by 0.1%. The recruitment market saw growth through quarter one on the whole with a notable increase in permanent hires whereas quarter 4 of 2011 saw more temporary recruitment. This can be explained by overall increases in confidence amongst businesses but also possibly as a result of the Agency Workers Regulations starting to come into effect.

As a business, Alexander Daniels continues to buck the trend and  benefit from strong demand based around the development of the brand and through our unique ADding Value proposition. For year ending March 2012 we can point to an increase in turnover of 276%, an increase in profit of 327% and the doubling of our headcount.

Earlier in the year we opened our second office in Bristol which is fully self funded through positive cash flow and profit. We believe that while there are still tough times ahead, through creating an experience for our clients and candidates, we can take market share away from our competitors.
